Back this year performing at Homo Night in Canada for the first time in five years! This annual showcase for queer performers has always been one of my favourite shows to perform at, with a number of my most memorable on-stage experiences happening at Homo Night.
The show itself always runs without a hitch thanks to the amazing production of Mark German and the hosting by the B-Girlz, absolute legends in the Toronto performance scene. The B-Girlz kicked off this year’s show with their hysterical take on current events including Trump and Kim Jong-un.
Leading up to the show I was super nervous as I was debuting brand new material never performed live before and touching on some difficult topics such as the impact of SARS on Toronto Asians and the de-classification of Asians as radicalized minorities (due to having “too much” economic wealth to be affected by systemic racism. Amazingly, the crowd was super receptive and once again I had a ton of fun performing for them.
Some of the performers such as Paul Hutcheson and Dawn Whitwell I hadn’t seen in years while others like Brian Millward and Ashley Moffat are fresh faces I had never seen perform live before. The veterans of the show, Martha Chaves and Richard Ryder, finished off the show with incredible sets that really capped an amazing night of fun.
Next year will mark the 20th anniversary of Homo Night in Canada. Fingers crossed that I’ll get tagged to perform but if not I will still be there with open arms to celebrate the amazing 20-year run of such a fabulous show.
